General Tips

  1. You don't need to fill in all the details - only add what you think is helpful or necessary.
  2. Save often.
  3. Avoid listing too many Experiences and Outcomes in your plan.

Logging on to the CfE Planning Tool

  1. Open your browser and go to http://www.curriculum–for-excellence.co.uk/
  2. Click the Login button in the top right hand corner, enter your username and password and then click the Login button.
  3. On the main menu bar at the top of the screen you will now see a link to the Planning Tool – click it.
  4. Click the Add new button to create a brand new Plan.

Creating your first plan

  1. Click in the Title of Plan field and give the plan a suitable title.
  2. Click in the Description field and type in a broad description of this plan.
  3. At this point it is probably worth saving your plan by clicking on the Save button in the left-hand column.
  4. Select the CfE Level from the drop-down menu.
  5. Now you are ready to begin to plan the first Task.  A Task is simply a part of a plan.  The plan you are working on might comprise only one Task, or it may contain several.   At this stage of the plan, however, there is only one Task.  Give Task 1 an appropriate title.

Adding Experiences and Outcomes

  1. If you know at this stage which Experiences and Outcomes you are planning to cover in this Task, you can select them by clicking the + sign which will take you to a menu of curricular areas.
    1. Click the Curriculum Area that you are planning for and a second menu will appear (Organiser).
    2. Click the appropriate Organiser to view the different Lines of Development within that Organiser.
    3. Click a Line of Development to see the associated Experiences and Outcomes.  Select the Es and Os that you wish to include in your plan and you will see a tick against those you have selected.
    4. Click the box that says ‘Add to Plan’.  Now you will see the selected Es and Os in your plan.
  2. If you wish to add more Es and Os, perhaps from another curricular area, simply click the + sign and go through the same process.  Try to avoid selecting too may Es and Os for your Task.  Only record those Es and Os that are most relevant.
  3. If you want to add Es and Os from a different CfE level, go back up to the Level drop down box and change the level.  Now you can add Es and Os from a different level.

Adding Learning Intentions

  1. At this stage of the plan you should consider the Learning Intentions for this Task.  Shared Learning Intentions (SLI) are an important aspect of Assessment for Learning and should be included at the planning stage.  Either type in the shared learning intentions (SLIs) or you can choose from the database of SLIs. To choose SLIs from the database click on the + button beside the field.
    1. Click on a subject.
    2. Click on an organiser.
    3. Click on each SLI you wish to add to your plan. You may need to scroll down to see them all. To add your selected SLIs to your plan click the + Add selection button. If you decide you want to go back to your plan without adding any SLIs then click on the red cross up to the right.
    4. You can edit any added SLIs to tailor them to your needs.
  2. Now record the key knowledge, understanding and skills that pupils will develop (associated with this Task).  This might show, for example, how you are differentiating the plan to account for the stage that pupils re at in their learning – for example, Developing, Consolidating and Secure.
  3. Save your plan again by clicking on the Save button on the left-hand side.

Adding Activities

  1. Type in the activities that will make up this task.  Alternatively, you may browse a range of suggested activities by following the steps below.
  2. To search for or browse activities click on the Search button near the Activities field.
    1. Use the check boxes to select which subject areas and which levels you are interested in searching.
    2. Type a word or phrase into the search entry field.
    3. Click on the Search button.
    4. If no results are found you can search again or click on the red cross to go back to the plan.
    5. Otherwise you will see a list of experiences and outcomes that might have relevant activities. Click on one of the experiences and outcomes to see the activities in the database.
    6. Select one or more activities and then click the + Add selected button to add them to your plan.
  3. To use the Chooser to find activities click on the + button next to the Activities field.
    1. Click on a subject.
    2. Click on an organiser.
    3. Click on a line of development if this area has them.
    4. Click  on an experience and outcome
    5. Select one or more activities and then click the + Add selected button to add them to your plan.
  4. This is a good time to save your plan again by clicking on the Save button.

Additional Information

  1. Record any cross-curricular links (if appropriate).  This might cover aspects of interdisciplinary learning, or links to other curricular areas.
  2. Type in how much time this task might take (could be, eg, 1 hour, or 20 minutes per day, or 2 days).
  3. Type in any assessment opportunities associated with this Task, or click the + button to select from a list of standard assessment types.
  4. Type in the approaches to learning and teaching that will be used in this Task, or click the + button to select from the list of standard approaches.
  5. You might wish to add other information such as resources, extension work, and progression.
  6. The last box within the Task is for you to record you evaluation at some point in the future.  Leave this blank until you have completed this piece of work with your class.  At a future point you can record your thoughts and reflections.
  7. Save your plan again by clicking on the Save button on the left-hand side.

Adding a New Task

  1. That might be your plan complete, or you may wish to create a new Task.  If you have more information to add to your plan, click Add Another Task button on the left-hand side and follow the same process as described in the steps above.
  2. You can change the order of tasks by using the Move Task Up and Move Task Down buttons. This is often easier when you have hidden the task details by clicking the Hide Details button on the left-hand side. Clicking Show Details will show the details again.

Capacities

  1. When you have finished adding Tasks you can select aspects of the four capacities of Curriculum for Excellence in relation to the plan you have just created.
  2. Save your plan for the last time by clicking on the Save button.

Printing and Saving

  1. After saving again you can generate a PDF for Printing (and saving to file) by clicking on the create PDF button on the left-hand side.
  2. When you are finished click on the My Plans button on the left –hand side.
